New NY Times Leter
Dear Editor, I read the article in today's paper and I think there can be nothing as important on the government's agenda right now as the mortgage crisis. One person interviewed said that the victims are usually lenders that are able to write off their losses. I think he forgets about us, the borrowers. We are not able to just forget about things and go on with our lives. In most cases, we can't. Back in 2002, I was a victim of mortgage fraud and even though I did everything to save my condo in Atlanta, it foreclosed in November 2005. Everything bad that can possibly happen to a person happened to me. For the first time in my life, I was in serious credit card debt, and I kept sinking and sinking. Over 5 years later, I am still paying the emotional, financial and psychological consequences of this personal tragedy. I think that we, the borrowers affected by the mortgage fraud cases, should be heard. Now I have no home and I don't know if I will ever have one again. Eugenia Renskoff

The Couch
December 25, 2007: The couch she used to rest on is probably gone by now. The storage people have auctioned it off. I can still see her, with her legs stretched out. Her dark brown eyes looked up at me as she held her coffee mug in her right hand. We would spend time together in the middle of the night and just talk. Talk about anything because both of us were very lonely. It was a brown and yellow striped couch. Not of great monetary value, but I felt and feel very sentimental about it. And the Cunningham Moving Company in San Francisco wouldn't wait for me to send them the check.

Maybe
December 24, 2007: Maybe it would have been better if she had remained Malena, the tango lady. Maybe life was a mother was too tough for her. Her style was good for the 50s and 60s and when she got to America, she had a hard time adapting. Motherhood, especially working motherhood, was different here. Taking care of three kids and being away all day just wasn't her thing.

Malena's Birthday
December 23, 2007: Yesterday would have been my mother's 92nd birthday. Her theme song was Malena, the famous 1940s tango.

Back
December 20, 2007: If I haven't written in a while, it's because I have been travelling back to the US. It was a long, hard journey, full of tribulations, but here I am. Everything is changed, but it's also the same. Almost 3 years in Argentina have made me see things in different lights and they are all interesting in their own ways.

South Puerto Madero
Thursday, December 13, 2007: In South Puerto Madero there are carritos, where people can buy choripanes, sausage sandwiches. And there are also small barbecue stands and stands that say: Hot Dogs and Cold Drinks. South Puerto Madero has a lot of empty lots, but I have a feeling that will soon change. There are some buildings in construction with names like Townhomes. English is the A List language.
Unfortunately, the stray dog problem is in Puerto Madero, too. I saw nice looking dogs, none scruffy or in bad shape. Their eyes followed people waiting for the colectivo numbers 2 and 4, but no one paid attention to them.

Presidenta
Monday, December 10, 2007: Today Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner becomes the new President of Argentina. She is the first woman elected to lead the country. There was nother woman president Isabel Martinez de Peron, back in the early 70s, but she inherited the presidency when her husband Juan Peron died. Isabelita, as she was called, was a disastrous presidenta.

Neighbors
Hola, Mis vecinos del edificio donde vivo en Vte. Lopez, se portaron muy mal cuando mi perro Rubio se enfermo. En especial, el portero no tuvo piedad ni con el ni conmigo. Eugenia Renskoff

Doggie Klutz
December 7, 2007: He stuck his tongue out and kissed me all over. It was all wet and he kept on kissing me. Then he came to sit by me. He got up to put his front paws on my lap. I want attention, he seemed to say. I want your attention! Just like I had it when we lived together.I looked at him several times. Giving him up was a mistake.

100 Years
Friday, December 7, 2007: He would have been 100 years old today. The man who used to pamper and spoil me so long ago would have celebrated his first humdred years. And he would have probably done it in Miami, in the land of fish and water and Collins Avenue. May he Rest in Peace! May he have a Miami up there in Heaven.

Birthday
Wednesday, December 5, 2007: Today would have been her 93rd birthday. She was a feisty, strong and resilient woman. When she died, I realized that there people who are irreplaceable, indispensible. My Tia was one of them. Her strenght and her love I will remember even I am no longer here.

Tearing Up
Wednesday, December 5, 2007: My last time in Tigre. I saw him digging into a black garbage bag. He was a big German Shepherd mix and his teeth looked very sharp. The meaning of the word despair hit me. Why should a dog have to go through this scanvenging for food routine? There are so many other dogs like him, all abandoned, most hardened to the street life.

Place
All he wants is a place to lie down, a little bit of food and fresh water. I look at him with his head resting against the front door and I understand him, my new old dog. He must have lived in a really nice place, with lots of kids running around. My small apt. must be quite a change for him.

Underage Drinking
Sunday, December 2, 2007: Kids in Argentina start drinking as early as 13 and this has begun to worry authorities. The emergency rooms of hospitals receive many kids in a state of total unconsciousness. They are taken to the hospitals by their friends, to be patched up until the following weekend. Two or three years ago the average kid would initiate himself into the drinking world at 16 or 17.
